I know its only May, but summer is right around the corner, and with that comes beaches and pools. Kids will be going to summer camps and they will also be heading there.

Now living in South Florida, even after all the warnings, drownings still happen. Broward County are offering swimming lessons at several water parks. I did some calling around for prices.

The way they work is in 2 week sessions, Monday through Friday. Depending on the park will depend on the times, but they all charge the same, $50 for the 2 weeks, each night 30 minutes, Friday would be a make up day if one night gets rained out.

Registration begins May 5 for swimming lessons offered at three Broward County Parks –

C.B. Smith
900 N. Flamingo Road
Pembroke Pines

T.Y.
Hollywood, 954-357-8811.

The Learn to Swim Programs, for ages 2 through 10, will meet for eight lessons on Mondays through Thursdays, from Monday, June 11, through Thursday, August 16. Call the park of your choice to preregister today.

Wel l its finally time! My sister gets to go home, but not without a Life Vest. I have spoken with a few people and have said she needs to go home with one, and everyone I have spoken with has asked me the very same question : “What is a Life Vest?”

What is a Life Vest?

In a nut shell, its a wearable defibrillator is worn by patients at risk for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), providing protection during their changing condition and while permanent SCA risk has not been established. The LifeVest allows a patient’s physician time to assess their long-term arrhythmic risk and make appropriate plans.

Because the Doctor is still not sure what caused the dissection and in turned caused the Heart Attack, he has put this device on her to wear until he figures things out. Of course now, because she has to wear this, she is not able to drive until it is removed, because it may go off in the middle of driving.

Its a small price to pay for saving ones life! She gets to wear it for 3 months and then re-evaulated the situation and see if she still has to continue to wear it.

There is other good news but I will let her tell that part! Stay tuned!!

*****Update****

My sister has been following along with the post that I have written about her. One of the things she texted me about yesterdaty was whether or not I had a video up about the life vest that she now has to wear. My thoughts were, there is a video? Heck I will go in a put it u for sure, didn’t know that there was one.

So on my sister’s behalf here is the video explaining about how the life vest works!

If you are in Martin County, first day of school was today as well as some private schoolsin Broward, but for the most part, first day of school is on Monday August 22. Are you ready? Did you take advantage of Tax free weekend? I know I did. Now all three of my kids are ready!

Now I am awaiting on the bus schedule. I never understand why that takes so long to come and they wait on the last minute, but they do, so that is the last thing I can check on. Meeting with the kids teachers on Friday for the Meet and Greet. Will take advantage of the time to drop off the supplies so the kids are not carrying those on Monday.

I’m excited and scared at the same time. Guess its a parent thing! Now remember, going through the school zones, its back to 15MPH. Police presences is REAL BIG the first week of school, so I would take extra precaution, and if you don’t need to go through a school zone or know of another way, I would suggest you take it. That first week can be confusing and inpatient. SO TAKE ANOTHER ROUTE IF YOU DON’T HAVE TO GO THAT WAY! I know it must feel like I am yelling at you, but I can’t say it any other way.

Good Luck kids! Enjoy your New School Year!

Here is a list that you should have in your hurricane kit. I have a tote with all my supplies that I keep in the garage. Every June I go through it and make sure if I need anything to pick it up.

Drinking water- One gallon per person per day. Have enough for about five days.

Food- Enough for at least 5 days.

Diapers- Formula- This you should have as well.

Manual can opener- bottle opener.

Paper good- cups, plates, napkins, utensils

Household bleach

Extra Bedding

Clothing

First aid kit

Medicines

Hand santizer

Flash light- one per person

Car charger

Hardline Phone

Books and games for the kids

Pet food

Tool Kit- Rope, hammer, wood nails, saw, tarp, duct tape

Plastic bags

Propane gas or charcoal

Fire extinguisher

Waterproof matches

Sunscreen, and Mosquito repellent

Seems like a lot to have. Most of this stuff I already have in there, so I am not constantly running to go buy every year. Once you have it that’s it. I usually have to buy batteries, water, food and stuff for the kids.

Like I said the other day. We are now in Hurricane Season as of June 1 and will end on Nov 30. Have you develop a Hurricane Plan? No, well here are some steps to take to do just that.

Hold a family meeting.

Discuss whether you will need to evacuate

Ensure your asset are protected

Asses your homes for vulnerable areas

Make a plan to protect your Vehicles

Secure your Home

Determine whether anyone in your home has special needs.

Make a plan for your pets

Gather your supplies

Notify others of your plan

Most of these steps are quite easy and don’t take much time.

The meeting is just to discuss what everyone would do if a hurricane was to come. If everyone has there own task things can move much more smoothly.

Your asset- birth certificates, etc. Make copies and put the originals in a safe place.

Your home- are there any weak areas that can be fixed? You should take care of that now. You can’t do it, then hire someone. You don’t know who to hire? Call me I know the perfect person.

Your Vehicle- Do you have space in your garage or is it stuffed with storage?

Secure your home- Do you have shutters?

Special needs- Anyone on medicine, oxygen, etc. Get those and make sure you have at least a 2 week supply.

Your pets- Not every shelter allows pets. If you plan on going to a shelter you must register early, they fill up fast.

Supplies- make sure you have your supplies early, you know how the grocery store can get when a storm is approaching.

Notify others- This is a big one. Everyone always forgets to tell others that they are evcuating and the families that are trying to contact you can’t and can get nervous. So pick up the phone and let them know.

Simple steps, but not everyone does them till its to late. Try not to be the one who waits and is running around like a mad person trying to gather all this at once. Its not fun, trust me I know. Learned the hard way myself!

So hurricane season is here. Are you prepared? I’m sure you are not. Yes I know the last 2 years we have escaped any type of storm, and I thank God everyday for it. But what happens if a storm is approaching. Do you have the necessary items to weather the storm out. Over the next few days I will be posting tips to prepare anyone and everyone so that you are ready for it.

Pre- Season Preparation

Know all evacuation routes if you live near the coast line.- Cat 1 storms east of Federal Hwy is an evacuation zone. Cat 2 storms east of I95 is an evacuation zone. So make sure you pay closer attention. You will be effected first.

Make sure your home meets building codes for withstanding hurricanes

Windows- Inspect windows to make sure they are in working conditions
Shutters- Practice putting all of your shutters to make sure they fit and you have all your hardware- If you have the Roland shutters try closing them to make sure that they don’t stick-if so get silcone spray and spray the tracks.
Doors- Inspect doors to make sure they are in good condition. Add extra locks or slide bolts to inward- swinging doors. French doors and double doors are especially vulnerable.
Check Gutters- For clogs and loose bracing. Gutters that are back up have a tendance to drain into the roof.
Roof- Make sure all tiles are secured. Check your solar panels- Had a client tell me he lost his because he forgot to take them down..
Trees- If you plan on trimming your trees, now would be the time. You don’t want them lying around when a storm is approaching.

Have your proper tools, supplies, first aid kit.

Have plenty of batteries and flashlights. Have a flash light for each person in the house- even the kids. Make sure you change out the batteries now and replensh the ones you have. The shelf life of the batteries is not long so if you have had them for some time buy new ones.

Always have non perishable foods on hand- Canned Tuna for example.

Look for some more tips to come. I hope this was helpful!
