Here is a list that you should have in your hurricane kit. I have a tote with all my supplies that I keep in the garage. Every June I go through it and make sure if I need anything to pick it up.

  • Drinking water- One gallon per person per day. Have enough for about five days.
  • Food- Enough for at least 5 days.
  • Diapers- Formula- This you should have as well.
  • Manual can opener- bottle opener.
  • Paper good- cups, plates, napkins, utensils
  • Household bleach
  • Extra Bedding
  • Clothing
  • First aid kit
  • Medicines
  • Hand santizer
  • Flash light- one per person
  • Car charger
  • Hardline Phone
  • Books and games for the kids
  • Pet food
  • Tool Kit- Rope, hammer, wood nails, saw, tarp, duct tape
  • Plastic bags
  • Propane gas or charcoal
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Waterproof matches
  • Sunscreen, and Mosquito repellent

Seems like a lot to have. Most of this stuff I already have in there, so I am not constantly running to go buy every year. Once you have it that’s it. I usually have to buy batteries, water, food and stuff for the kids.

Develop a Plan! Hurricane Tips

Like I said the other day. We are now in Hurricane Season as of June 1 and will end on Nov 30. Have you develop a Hurricane Plan? No, well here are some steps to take to do just that.

  • Hold a family meeting.
  • Discuss whether you will need to evacuate
  • Ensure your asset are protected
  • Asses your homes for vulnerable areas
  • Make a plan to protect your Vehicles
  • Secure your Home
  • Determine whether anyone in your home has special needs.
  • Make a plan for your pets
  • Gather your supplies
  • Notify others of your plan

Most of these steps are quite easy and don’t take much time.

The meeting is just to discuss what everyone would do if a hurricane was to come. If everyone has there own task things can move much more smoothly.

Your asset- birth certificates, etc. Make copies and put the originals in a safe place.

Your home- are there any weak areas that can be fixed? You should take care of that now. You can’t do it, then hire someone. You don’t know who to hire? Call me I know the perfect person.

Your Vehicle- Do you have space in your garage or is it stuffed with storage?

Secure your home- Do you have shutters?

Special needs- Anyone on medicine, oxygen, etc. Get those and make sure you have at least a 2 week supply.

Your pets- Not every shelter allows pets. If you plan on going to a shelter you must register early, they fill up fast.

Supplies- make sure you have your supplies early, you know how the grocery store can get when a storm is approaching.

Notify others- This is a big one. Everyone always forgets to tell others that they are evcuating and the families that are trying to contact you can’t and can get nervous. So pick up the phone and let them know.

Simple steps, but not everyone does them till its to late. Try not to be the one who waits and is running around like a mad person trying to gather all this at once. Its not fun, trust me I know. Learned the hard way myself!

Hurricane Tips

So hurricane season is here. Are you prepared? I’m sure you are not. Yes I know the last 2 years we have escaped any type of storm, and I thank God everyday for it. But what happens if a storm is approaching. Do you have the necessary items to weather the storm out. Over the next few days I will be posting tips to prepare anyone and everyone so that you are ready for it.

Pre- Season Preparation

  • Know all evacuation routes if you live near the coast line.- Cat 1 storms east of Federal Hwy is an evacuation zone. Cat 2 storms east of I95 is an evacuation zone. So make sure you pay closer attention. You will be effected first.
  • Make sure your home meets building codes for withstanding hurricanes

Windows- Inspect windows to make sure they are in working conditions
Shutters-  Practice putting all of your shutters to make sure they fit and you have all your hardware- If                          you have the Roland shutters try closing them to make sure that they don’t stick-if so get silcone spray and                        spray the tracks.
Doors- Inspect doors to make sure they are in good condition. Add extra locks or slide bolts to inward-                       swinging doors. French doors and double doors are especially vulnerable.
Check Gutters- For clogs and loose bracing. Gutters that are back up have a tendance to drain into the                         roof.
Roof- Make sure all tiles are secured. Check your solar panels- Had a client tell me he lost his because                     he forgot to take them down..
Trees- If you plan on trimming your trees, now would be the time. You don’t want them lying around                             when a storm is approaching.

  • Have your proper tools, supplies, first aid kit.
  • Have plenty of batteries and flashlights. Have a flash light for each person in the house- even the kids. Make sure you change out the batteries now and replensh the ones you have. The shelf life of the batteries is not long so if you have had them for some time buy new ones.
  • Always have non perishable foods on hand- Canned Tuna for example.

Look for some more tips to come. I hope this was helpful!

hurricane6As Hurricane season approaches us I’ll ask you a question, Are you prepared? If you have ever been through a Hurricane you know how crazy it can get before it comes.

Stores get crazy, gas stations have a mile long, you are running around trying to get everything in order. But there are few who don’t worry about it. Why you ask? Well it’s because they are ready, they are prepared!!!

In the next few post I will go over some main things that should be covered before a hurricane approaches and you won’t have to be one of the thousands of people who are running around.

So stay tuned…….
