Develop a Plan! Hurricane Tips

Like I said the other day. We are now in Hurricane Season as of June 1 and will end on Nov 30. Have you develop a Hurricane Plan? No, well here are some steps to take to do just that.

  • Hold a family meeting.
  • Discuss whether you will need to evacuate
  • Ensure your asset are protected
  • Asses your homes for vulnerable areas
  • Make a plan to protect your Vehicles
  • Secure your Home
  • Determine whether anyone in your home has special needs.
  • Make a plan for your pets
  • Gather your supplies
  • Notify others of your plan

Most of these steps are quite easy and don’t take much time.

The meeting is just to discuss what everyone would do if a hurricane was to come. If everyone has there own task things can move much more smoothly.

Your asset- birth certificates, etc. Make copies and put the originals in a safe place.

Your home- are there any weak areas that can be fixed? You should take care of that now. You can’t do it, then hire someone. You don’t know who to hire? Call me I know the perfect person.

Your Vehicle- Do you have space in your garage or is it stuffed with storage?

Secure your home- Do you have shutters?

Special needs- Anyone on medicine, oxygen, etc. Get those and make sure you have at least a 2 week supply.

Your pets- Not every shelter allows pets. If you plan on going to a shelter you must register early, they fill up fast.

Supplies- make sure you have your supplies early, you know how the grocery store can get when a storm is approaching.

Notify others- This is a big one. Everyone always forgets to tell others that they are evcuating and the families that are trying to contact you can’t and can get nervous. So pick up the phone and let them know.

Simple steps, but not everyone does them till its to late. Try not to be the one who waits and is running around like a mad person trying to gather all this at once. Its not fun, trust me I know. Learned the hard way myself!
